In reality bedrooms are often one of the most challenging rooms to work with, often with the smallest square footage in the whole house. If you can fit a wardrobe, a bed and two bedsides then that's a bonus. So what do we do about storage?
Under the bed storage has been the go to for small space dwellers but as a self-confessed hater of storage beds (how are they convenient?), I have had to get creative with under bed storage.
A low profile bed works really well in a small room as frees up wall space, allowing the eye to travel up the wall and give the illusion of more space. This is particularly true in attic conversions or dormer bedrooms where the ceiling height is so much lower. Annoyingly, this then limits the amount of space available for under bed storage containers.
I had this exact problem in my own bedroom with only 15cm of clearance under the bed. Most storage options I could find were closer to 20cm. For a long time I struggled with some garment bags which were a pain to pull in and out from under the bed.
One day I randomly came across some 20cm oak bed legs on amazon (whilst researching different leg shapes for some furniture I was designing!) and they were only £20. I immediately pressed order and as Amazon does, they sent them by the very next day. I'm not normally an advocate for Amazon but these were too good to be true.
I put aside half a day to fit the bed legs to my bed thinking that it would be an arduous task but it took me less than 30 minutes including giving it a good spring clean under the bed before I put everything back together.
This tiny tweak opened up a world of possibilities for me in terms of storage options and I went for some flat seagrass containers. I love the look of these but they ARE very rough and scratchy so I ended up lining them to protect my jumpers.
This has completely transformed my small bedroom, allowing me to store my off season wardrobe under the bed in easy to access storage containers instead of having to fight with garment bags and route through to find what I need.
I will be switching out my bedside tables for floating bedside tables to make the access easier. I just had these ones in for a shoot but for my bedroom, floating will definitely work better.
